First Lines Friday

First Lines Friday – 5th November 2021

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

First Lines . . .

“You may think you know the story. It goes like this: once upon a time, there was a sixteen-year-old girl named Jane Grey, who was forced to marry a complete stranger (Lord Guildford or Gilford or Gifford-something-or-other), and shortly thereafter found herself ruler of a country. She was Queen for nine days. Then she quite literally lost her head.”

Today’s First Lines Friday book is . . .

Dearest Jane,

Sorry I made you marry a horse.

Your father-in-law is trying to kill me.

Send help!

This is the story of a real Queen of England. Not the nasty version where her head is chopped off, but the one with lots of humour, romance, and galloping around. Lady Jane must keep her wits to survive, but it’s tricky when your downfall is being plotted and your new husband forgets to tell you that he turns into a horse.

Did you guess this book by its first lines? Let me know in the comments!

Thank you for reading this post.
