Hello!
First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!
First Lines . . .
“Harry Potter was a highly unusual boy in many ways. For one thing, he hated the Summer holidays more than any other time of year. For another, he really wanted to do his homework, but was forced to do it in secret, in the dead of night. And he also happened to be a wizard.”
I’m sure that the character’s name has given away the series, but do you know what number in the series this is?
Today’s First Lines Friday book is . . .

“Welcome to the Knight Bus, emergency transport for the stranded witch or wizard. Just stick out your wand hand, step on board and we can take you anywhere you want to go.”
When the KNIGHT BUS crashes through the darkness and SCREECHES to a halt in front of him, it’s the start of another far from ordinary year at HOGWARTS for Harry Potter. Sirius Black, ESCAPED mass-murderer and follower of LORD VOLDEMORT, is on the RUN – and they say he is coming after Harry. In his first ever Divination class, Professor Trelawney sees an OMEN of death in Harry’s tea leaves . . . But perhaps the most TERRIFYING of all are the DEMENTORS patrolling the school grounds, with their soul-sucking KISS . . .
id you guess this book by its first lines? Let me know in the comments!
Thank you for reading this post.

Something I do love about this series is that regardless of how long it is before I return to Harry Potter, I always feel like I’ve just finished reading them!

I totally agree with you, Harry Potter was one of the first fantasy series that I read! What was the other series?

This is my favourite book of the series so I’d be disappointed if I couldn’t get it just from the opening lines!
